Spektar's role implies directing and maintaining the ship's weaponry during space combat.  A space battle is a terrifying affair, in which thinly armoured vessels fire PDCs at each other, capable of unleashing several thousand rounds a minute apiece, each round punching a hole in the enemy and letting in the vacuum.  A ship caught in a hail of PDC fire can only pray that the bullets don't hit anything vital - such as crew members.
The Belter learnt his trade in an OPA-affiliated protection ring, through which rock-hoppers pay a small fee to hire a combat skiff and pilot to protect them from piracy.  The Tears of Corruption came across his drifting skiff, shot to pieces by the pirate vessel that laid in ruin beside him.  Fiday, who hates anyone who preys on Belters, took him in and he never looked back.

 

Spektar was still on Fiday's crew when a black-market trader working out of Pandora hired the Tears of Corruption to get rid of some troublesome merchandise smuggled out of no less a place than Phoebe Research Station.  Although quickly released by Martian IS, he has a serious grudge with Armat Sin, who shot him in the back and killed one of his friends.  The two men faced off again during an ambush set by the pirate crew, but once again Spektar came off worse.

Although he did not agree with the crew's Ceres mission, and took no part in it, he was caught up in the fallout.  Spektar did, on occasion, consider leaving, but with MCRN-IS having placed a price on his head it was unlikely he would have survived long.  Hence he stayed on the Tears of Corruption to share its fate.
